Details

Lord Shiva is worshiped here and the main deity of the temple is the Goddess Mahisamardini. The goddess is represented with slender waist, broad breasts, ten hands, and holding different weapons in each hand. She is seen placing her right foot on the lion, and pressing the shoulder of the buffalodemon with her left. She pierces the tridentthrough the body of the demon, and has fastened his arm with a noose. To put her weight on the Asura, the goddess is slightly bent to the left. The lion is also represented attacking the demon.

Specialty

The temple has sculptural representations belonging to the three sects of Hindus, Saivism, Vaisnavism and Saktism. At the foot of the hill and covering the extensive area are found a good number of Siva Lingas cut out of granite stone. As a local tradition has it, there were about 99,999 lingas and these were established with a view to make this town a second Kasi.

Festivals Observed

Festivals- On the occasion of Mahashivaratri, a tradional Mela (fair) is organized in the Shiva Temple and devotees visit across India to offer Prayings and Pooja ceremonies to the Lord Shiva . During the most sacred month of Sawan -August September, Chanting of the HareKrishna mantra and Hare Krishna kirtan are being conducted throughout the night, which is a major attraction to the devotees and visitors .The two most magnificent and surpassing festivals- The Dol Yatra and Rath Yatra are celebrated annually at Vishnu Dol. Navratri/Durga Puja and Kali Pooja are also commemorated every year with great popm and fervour during March and September–October at Devidol. The lists of the fests celebrated are- • Mahashivaratri – February or March • Hare Krishna kirtan – August or September • Durga Pooja Festival – September or October • Dol Purnima – February or March • Rath Yatra – June or July
