Udupi - The land of breathtaking beauty, located between the verdant mountains of the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea is famous for Sri Krishna Temple. It is located at a distance of 65 km from Mangalore and 403 km from Bangalore.

This is one of the popular Krishna temples in Karnataka, where the deity is decked up by jewels by his followers. The unique feature of this Ashram/Matha is that devotees can only view Lord Krishna through a small window which has nine holes. This is popularly known as Navagraha Kitiki.

Best time to visit:

The best time to visit Udupi is from October to March while the peak Season is from November to February. Usually it takes 2 days to visit places in and around Udupi.

How To Reach:

By Air- Mangalore Airport is the nearest airport, which is 62 km from Udupi.

By Train: Udupi Railway Station is well connected by trains to cities like Trivandrum, Bangalore, Mangalore, kochi, Bikaner, Madgoan, Mumbai, Tirunelveli, New Delhi and Goa.

By Road: Buses regularly ply from Udupi to major cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Goa, Shimoga, Mysore, Karwar, Pune and Mumbai.

 

History

Mythology says that Famous Hindu saints such as Chaitanya, Purandaradasa and Kanakadasa visited this temple for the darshan of Lord Krishna. And according to the Hindu Mythology, Madhwacharya (Vaishnavite saint Jagadguru) discovered Sri Krishna murti in a very large ball of Gopichandana. The murti is placed Pashchimabhimukha(facing West) as suggested by Sri Madhwacharya in his Tantrasara Sangraha. All the other idols are placed in other Ashta mutts facing west. Visitors and the devotees always have Darshan through the inner windowwhich is famous as Navagraha kindi however the outer window is what is called Kanakana kindi. All the pilgrims witness Lord Krishna through the inner window and the outer window is known as Kanakanakhindi which is decorated by an arch named after him. An idol has also been erected and a similar window covers the front of the deity which is called Navagraha kind.

Festivals Observed

Janmashtami preparation takes place in full swing in South Indian states too. Many sweets and delicious delicacies are made on this occasion however ladoos and chakkulis stand out as they are believed to be the favorite of the Mahaprabhu. Arghya Pradana is the most important part of the celebration that involves offering of milk and water to the Lord which includes tiger dance performance by musicians followed by other cultural programs.
