Diwali Lakshmi Puja Vidhi, Rituals, Aarti and Significance

Five Days of Diwali starts from Dhanteras to Bhai dooj; but in Maharashtra, it starts with Vasu Baras. Main Diwali Puja falls on the third day of Diwali (Diwali Amavasya). On this day Lakshmi Puja is performed along with Lord Ganesha. Apart from Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja, Kuber Puja and Bahi-Khata Puja are also done. Here is step by step process for your Diwali Lakshmi Puja.

Diwali Puja Date and Muhurat

Diwali Lakshmi Puja should be performed at an appropriate Diwali Puja Muhurat while considering fixed Lagna, Pradosh time, and Amavasya Tithi. Lakshmi puja is an essential ritual in Diwali. In 2021; it observes on Thursday, 4 November.

It is strictly advised to do Lakshmi puja on accurate muhurat. As muhurat varies from place to place; don’t collect muhurat from any unauthorized online sources. Consult any recognized pandit nearby or verified online sources like Drikpanchang.

Diwali Puja Vidhi and Rituals

  • Arrange the offerings to be given while doing Puja: Kumkum, Chandan, Chawal (Rice), Agarbatti, Laung (Cloves), Ilaichi (Cardamom), Supari (Areca Nut), Panchamrit, Fruits, Kapoor, Dhoop, Itra (perfume), Coins, Flowers, Prasad, Maala, Patasha (Sugar Batashe), PeeliSarso (Yellow mustard seeds), Kamal Gatta (Lotus Flower Seeds), Lotus Flower, Copy and Pen, Moli (Red thread), Paan Leaves, Food items prepared- like HalwaPuri etc.
  • Taking bath early in the morning before sunrise.
  • During the Muhurat timings, place the diety idols Ganesha & Lakshmi along with Maa Saraswati over a place.
  • Pray Lord Ganesha to come and remove all obstacles during Lakshmi puja. Put tilak of roli and akshat on the forehead of Lord Ganesha. Offer scent, flowers, dhoop, sweets (naivedya) and earthen lamp to Lord Ganesha.
  • Now start Lakshmi puja. Put Tilak of roli and rice on the forehead of Goddess Lakshmi. Offer scent, flowers, dhoop, sweets and earthen lamp (deepak) to Goddess Lakshmi. Now offer coriander seeds, cotton seeds, dry whole turmeric, silver coin, currency notes, supari and seed of lotus flower to Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Pray to Lord Vishnu to come along with Goddess Lakshmi. Offer scent, flower, dhoop, sweets, fruits and earthen lamp to Lord Vishnu.
  • Pray to Lord Kuber to come along with Goddess Lakshmi and give wealth. Do worship of Lord Kuber by offering earthen lamp, scent, flowers, dhoop, and sweets.
  • Now do worship of Goddess Saraswati. Put tilak on the forehead of Goddess Saraswati and put akshat on it. Offer scent, flowers, dhoop, sweets, and earthen lamp. Pray to get divine knowledge and guidance on the life path.
  • Now do the worship of Elephants in the photo. Offer a pair of sugarcane to elephants of Goddess Lakshmi. Do Lakshmi Aarti after this Puja.
  • If you wish to do Japa of the mantra of Ma Lakshmi, then the simplest and most powerful mantra is ‘Shreem Swaha’. Recite this mantra at least 108 times.
  • In the evening, wear new clothes.
  • It is seen that the elder person or one person of a family observe fast on this day and break the fast after looking at the Diya lightings in the evening.
  • Preparing Sweets and Prasad
  • Decorating house entrance with Vandanvar, Rangolis
  • Drawing small footprints indicating Goddess Lakshmi entrance.
  • Kalash filled with water and Dub
  • Big Diya with Ghee therein which has to be lit up throughout the night
  • Do the puja with the offerings arranged and do the Aarti with Kapoor placed over Pan Leaves

Don’t forget to lit up the Diyas outside and inside the house. Keep the Big Diya burning throughout the night for Goddess Lakshmi. Take blessings from the elders of the family and have dinner.

Significance of Diwali Lakshmi Puja
