Good Things Take Time – A Thief’s Experience

When you think positive, good things happen. And good things come to those who believe, better things come to those who are patient and the best things come to those who don’t give up. So never give up and change yourself. “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.

Here is a story about a robber who gave up his profession because he could not lie.

the good thief

There was a thief in a village. Wherever he used to go, he started stealing personal stuff from people around him. He stole private stuff and other related belongings that could be important, private, exclusive to them. He never found the peace and the satisfaction without stealing which has actually become his profession. Everyone in the village knew about him, they commenced to carefully look after their belongings whenever they saw him nearby. However, he got victory each and every time in stealing things as he was a clever, sharp and intelligent robber.

A prominent Swami (Priest) once visited that village; people from neighboring village came to visit him. Swami preached them morality and spirituality. Sometimes after the discourse, the villagers noticed their missing money, pens, watches or the slippers that were left outside. They were all sure that ‘the thief’ had stolen them.

Moreover, once the thief also visited the Swami and asked: “Please teach me something.”

“Go away, one should be sure to understand the morals of life- otherwise there won’t be any use” Swami replied. But the thief was persistent. Finally, the Swami said, “At least if you give up stealing, I’ll teach you.”

“How can I stop stealing, it’s my profession, I’ll have to starve otherwise.” said the thief.

They argued for a while, then the Swami said: “You may steal, but you must not lie.”

The thief agreed and promised to touch the feet of Swami “I’ll give up lying from now on.”

The Swami preached him when the thief was about to go the Swami reminded “Remember, you must keep your promise wherever you go.”

the good thief

The thief went away happily, he continued to steal from people, but if anybody asked him regarding their stolen items, he remembered the promise to Swami and spoke out the truth. As it happened, the villagers would directly go to this thief and get their stolen things back. The thief was left with nothing, ever since he had promised not to lie, his life had become difficult. The practice of speaking the truth was already firm in him, so he couldn’t lie anymore. Without lying there was no way he could keep the stolen things.

The Thief seriously thought for a while and decided ‘There is no way I can earn my living by stealing if I can’t lie about it. The only way for me now is to work hard like everyone else and live.’

Moral of the story: If we practice at least one of the good practices by all our hearts, every other bad habit will go and the man becomes pure and divine. Be patient because the best things happen unexpectedly.
