Suna Besha – The Golden Avatar Of Lord Jagannath

Suna Besha is a special event of Jagannath rath yatra; when Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra Devi are decorated with gold jewelry. It is also known as Rajadhiraja Bhesha or Raja Besha. It was observed on the day after the return of the Deities from Gundicha Temple. On the day of Bada Ekadasi, the 11th day of the bright fortnight in Asadha; the deities on their chariots themselves done the golden attire or the Suna Besha with hands, arms, and crown made of solid gold.

At Jagannath rath yatra, Suna Besha 2022 is observed on Sunday, 10 July (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi).

Generally, Suna Besha is observed five times during the year. It happens on Bijaya Dashami (in October), Kartika Purnima (November), Paush Purnima (December/January), Dol Purnima (March), and Asadha Ekadashi (July). The last Besha is observed on the chariot in front of Jagannath Temple, the other four Beshas are observed inside Jagannath temple on Ratna Singhasana.

Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath

Lord Jagannath – The God of the Universe has different forms. He adopts these forms according to the necessities of his devotees. In Jagannath Temple Puri; the Lord is adorned with cotton and silken fabrics, gold ornaments, flowers, precious stones, leaves, and sandalwood every day.

In total, there are 32 Bashas (forms) which are Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. Suna Besha is one of the most looked upon by the Devotees as it is done in the great chariots. It is done on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi Tithi (i.e. the 11th bright fortnight in Asadha). This is also known as Bada Tadhau Besha. In this, the Gods and Goddess are adorned with beautifully carved Gold jewelry. They are loaded with precious stones and the yellow shine of the Gold from top to bottom.

This form of God is put into action when the deities return from their visit to their aunt’s place. The chariots of the three Gods are kept in front of the Lion Gate of the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri and there they are made to wear these ornaments. It is believed that whoever sees the Lord in Suna Besha gets free of all his bad Karmas. A huge number of the crowd can be seen in front of the temple to feel the power of the Lord on this day.
