Kanwar Yatra

Description

Lord Shiva is a supreme being and is FATHER of Trinity. He is highly cherished by Saawan month or Shrawana (Shravana) Maas which falls in the month of July or August every year. An eminent expedition- Kanwar Yatra is celebrated during the Hindu month of ‘Shravana’.  This divine pilgrim Yatra is the most noteworthy sacred observance for the devotees of Lord Shiva. Kanwar Yatra

Kanwar Yatra is devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Kanwaris/‘Kanwaria’ visit the sacred places such as-Amarnath Gufa (temple), Kedarnath Dham ,Gangotri and Gaumukh (Uttarakhand), Vishwanath Temple (Varanasi) Haridwar and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy water (Gangajal) from the River Ganga (Holy Ganges) for proffering the sacred Gangajal in Lord Shiva temples.

These Kanwaris are famous for their love and devotion towards Bholenath (Lord Shiva). They carry divine (Kanwar) or the small bamboo pole on which two earthen pots (Kamandals) are hung on either ends and walk bare-footed till temples to please Lord Shiva.
