Karwachauth Festival

In the Hindu Sanatan Dharma, Karwachauth is considered as an important festival for married women (suhagin). In this festival, women keep a day long fast for their beloved husbands. They also apply henna, wear bangles, and adorn themselves through sacred sixteen make-ups (solah- shringar) on the propitious day of Karwachauth. This fast is performed on the auspicious day of Kartik Krishna of Chandrodaya Vyapini Chaturthi in Kartik month. Women keep this fast for husband’s long life. This fast is kept almost in all the states with different rituals and sacraments or as per the prevailing beliefs, but these sacraments vary slightly in all the regions. Nevertheless, Karwachauth comes every year but we are not aware of the right method, and hence leads to non- fruitful results. If you stay away from your home and observing Karwachauth fast on this day, then it is necessary to know its proper rituals and ceremonial methods. Let's know the correct method of conducting Karwachauth's fast on Sunday, 28 October.

2. After the sargi, the nirjal fasting of Karwachauth begins. Keep chanting the name of Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva and Ganesh in your mind all day long.

3. Make pictures of falak and karwa from the grinded rice (liquid)- geru (ochre) on the walls and this process (art) of painting the walls is karwadharna, which is a very old tradition.

4. Make athavari from eight puri along with a sweet dish- halua. Also preparee ripe dishes (pakke pakwan).

5. Draw portraits of Mother Gauri (parvati) and Lord Ganesha with yellow clay. Put the portrait of Lord Ganesha in the lap of Mother Gauri. The worship of these portraits forms are useful during worshipping in the evening time.

8. Worship the portraits forms of Mother Gauri and Lord Ganesha. Recite this mantra -

'नमः शिवायै शर्वाण्यै सौभाग्यं संतति शुभाम् प्रयच्छ भक्तियुक्तानां नारीणां हरवल्लभे॥'

9. Now it’s time to hear or read the story of Karwachauth. After listening to the story, take blessing of all the elder people in your house.

10. During the night under moonlight, use channi to take a glimpse of moon and then the face of your dear husband. Touch his feet and take blessings. Then offer Prasad and food to your husband and then eat food later on.
