Nirjala Ekadashi is one of the most difficult and important Ekadashi vrat among all. It observes on the Jyeshta Shukla Paksha Ekadashi. According to sage Ved Vyas Ji, Bhimsen had worn this Ekadashi. For this reason, this Ekadashi was named Bhimseni Ekadashi.
There is also a law to fast and fast on this Ekadashi. By observing this fast, a person attains longevity and salvation. Nirjala means living without water, hence it is called Nirjala Ekadashi, it is a difficult fast. This fast is kept waterless, that is, water is not consumed during this fast.
In the year 2021 Nirjala Ekadashi falls on Monday, 21 June. Doing this Ekadashi gives the same results as fasting for 24 Ekadashi of the year. After this fast, one should wake up at Brahma Bella on Dwadashi Tithi and bathe, donate and eat Brahman food. On this day, by chanting the mantra "Un Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya", donate cows, clothes, chhatra, fruits, etc.
To observe Nirjala Ekadashi, the rules of fasting begin from the date of Dashami. In this Ekadashi, one should chant the mantra "Un Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya". On this day, donating cows also has special significance. In addition to fasting on this day, chanting, austerities, bathing, etc. are auspicious.
In this fast, Lord Vishnu is worshiped first and the fast story is heard. After worshiping, Brahmins should give Dakshina, Mishthan, etc. according to their strength, if possible, Jagran should be done on the night of the fast.
The story of Nirjala Ekadashi fast is as follows - In the Mahabharata period Bhimsen told Vyas Ji, O Lord, Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, Kunti, and Draupadi all fast on the day of Ekadashi but I cannot tolerate hunger. I can please Lord Vasudev by offering donations. I want to get the fruits without anybody's mass, so please help me by kindness.
Ved Vyas Ji tells Bhimsen that O Bhim, if you want to go to heaven, then observe the fast of both the Ekadashi without taking food because the fasting of Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month is said to be auspicious. In this fast, water can be taken in the fire. The fast is broken by taking an Annhar. Bhimsen did this fast as per the order of Vyas Ji and he was freed from sin.
The Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month is celebrated anhydrous in the midst of Mithun Sankranti. The fast becomes the beginning of the fast. Apart from this, one should wake up before sunrise on Dwadashi. Fasting on this Ekadashi is like taking a bath in all the pilgrimages. By fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi, a person gets freedom from all sins. A person who observes Nirjala Ekadashi does not suffer mental and physical suffering at the time of death. This Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Ekadashi. After this fast, the person who bathes, meditates and donates, gets the same fruit as donating crores of cows.
