Legend of Ratha Saptami
The story of Ratha Saptami or Maghi Saptami is given in the Puranas as follows. It is said that a woman named Ganika had never done any charity work in her whole life. When that woman's end came, she went to Vashistha Muni. The woman told the sage that if I have never done any charity, how will I get liberation. The sage said that on the seventh day of the bright fortnight of Magh month, it is Achala Saptami. On this day one gets a thousand times of the charity and charity than any other day. On this day, take a bath in the holy Nandi and give water to Lord Surya and should donate a lamp and eat it without salt once a day. By doing this one attains great virtue. The Ganesha fasted and practiced everything on the day of Saptami, told by Vasishta Muni. A few days later the courtesan renounced his body and had the privilege of becoming the head of the apsaras of heaven's King Indra.
