Return Gift Traditions of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on last day of the Shravan maas to celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters. On Rakhi day, a sister ties a sacred thread called “Rakhi” on her brother’s wrist and in turn, her brother vows to protect his sister. Every year, all siblings in India celebrate this festival of Rakhi with love and enthusiasm. Both brothers and sisters exchange gifts and cherish their special bond on this day. Also known as Rakhi Festival or Rakhi Purnima, as it falls on the day of the full moon. This year, Raksha bandhan falls on Thursday, 15 August 2019.

The return gift tradition

On Rakha bandhan, the sisters tie Rakhi to their brothers and then the brothers show their love by presenting their sisters with gifts. Giving gifts to sisters on the Rakhi day is one of the oldest traditions. This tradition of Rakhi gifts has its own significance among siblings as this is seen as a token of love which further strengthens the bond of love between a brother and sister. Mostly cash is given as a return rakhi gift to a sister. But now, this tradition of giving cash has changed and has taken the form of gift items. For siblings who live in different cities and can’t meet on this special day, the sister;s send Rakhi in the form of a greeting card along with kumkum or vermillion for tilak. People also senduseful gifts like decoratives complimenting the house decor, jewellery boxes, clothes or any other items that the brother feels will be of use for the sister.
