Panchami:
Lord Rama and Sita were married on the day of
Panchami of the Shukla Paksha in Margashirsha month. Since then this divine Panchami
is celebrated as 'Viva Panchami Parva' by the ardent devotees of Lord Rama.
This year, the date would be- Saturday, 19 December. This
festival is commemorated mostly in Nepal country as it is said that Mother Sita
was the daughter of King Mithila Naresh- Janak and he was a native of Nepal. Therefore,
in Nepal, this festival is observed as a big festivity in a traditional way. On
this special day at some religious places, there is also a recitation of Ramcharita
Manas, but they chant this holy text only till Rama- Janki chapters of marriage
ceremonies.

On this day, it is
believed that organizing the sacred wedding of Lord Rama and Nandini Sita is
considered very auspicious. According to mythological tales, on this day, Lord
Rama married to Janak Nandini Sita, which has been interestingly described in
the Ramacharitmanas by the great legend- Goswami Tulsidasji. People of Ayodhya
solemnize this great Indian festival with immense gusto and devotion by
arranging a grand marriage of the deities. The devotees also perform dedicated
rituals in a conventional way and also offer prayers to them. Janakpur also
witnesses a huge festive mela (exhibition) along with various cultural programs
on this day and holds numerous adorned idols of the gods on chariots assembled
in the procession in the embellished colorful streets. Followers of Rama also
pay a visit to umpteen temples and worship deities with proper traditional
customs.
