Prachin
Shiva Temple is also famous as- Shiv Mandir of Ambarnath among the local
residents and Lord’s Devotees. Prachin Shiva Temple is a very popular Shiva
Shrine situated at Ambarnath near Mumbai, in Maharashtra on the bank of the
River- Vadavan. This well- known Shiva abode is also well-known among as- Ambreshwar
Shiva Temple, and known locally as Puratana Shivalaya. This temple is venerated
to Lord Shiva and God is worshipped in the form of his Lingam Avatara. This
illustrious Shrine was established in 1060 A.D by Shilahara king Chhittaraja.
It was beautifully designed in Hemadpanthi style through marvels and stones. According
to Mythology, this was constructed by the five Pandava brothers in just one
night carved in a huge single mass of stone. MahaShivratri festival is celebrated on the 6th night of the dark
Phalgun- Feb or March every year. Devotees observe fast on this night and do
not eat anything till night and offer fruits, flowers and Bel leaves on Shiva
Linga. The Festival- Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed
the 'Tandava'. People believe that on this holy day Lord Shiva was married to
Parvati Maa. Devotees visit this temple especially on some auspicious occasions
to seek fulfilment of the following- Salvation; Wealth and Relief from
diseases.
