About
Bhairava Parvata is a renowned Hindu Temple
in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. It is esteemed as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of
Goddess Durga. Bhairava Parvat temple is
a prominent and sacred place to worship Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva in Ujjain.
The temple is positioned on the banks of the river Shipra on the hillocks of
Bhairava hills. As per the Hindu Mythology, when Lord Shiva was carrying the
corpse of his Goddess-Sati, her upper lip fell down in the same holy place
where the temple currently situated.
The idols inside the
sanctum- sanctorum are revered with the name- Avaanti or Garhkalika (Modest)
and Shiva as Lambakarna (Long eared one). MahaShivratri
is a Hindu Festival which is popular as-"The Great Night of
Shiva". It is a propitious festival largely celebrated in this holy
pilgrimage. This famous Shiva festival is commemorated on the new moon day in
the month of ‘Maagha’ according to the Hindu calendar in this famous temple.
This auspicious day is celebrated to worship Lord Shiva, who is an important God
in the Hinduism. The most striking and the attractive feature of this festival is
the active participation of the Naga Bavas.
