This temple is located at the highest point of Madanachala hill in Hajo, which is the north-west part of Guwahati in Kamrup District. Kedareswar Temple has an idol of Shiva (Shivlinga ) at the top centre of the hill, henceforth the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva . Basically the deity of Lord Shiva is positioned at the top of the small hill, which is named as Madanchalla. In 1753, Kedareswar Temple was built by Ahom King Rajeswar Singha. According to Hindu Mythology, The ‘lingam’ of this holiest Shiva temple is a very significant and momentous self-originated shiva lingam.
How to reach
The temple Kedareswara is connected directly to these cities/towns from the nearby cities, like Guwahati, Tezpur etc. The place where the temple is situated is at a distance of about 25 km to the west of Guwahati. Guwahati has direct railhead and airport connectivity as well.
It is believed that Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of linga, known as- Sayambhu Linga in Kedareswara or Kedara temple. People believe that it has the rare self originated phallic symbol, or Swayambhu Linga, thattoo in the Ardhanariswara, or androgynous form, which makes it different from all other ‘Shivlinga’ or Shiva temple. The priests and Pandits have put the ‘linga’ in a metal bowl which covers it externally. However, the carvings and engraving on the walls of the temple display that it was established by KingRajeswar Singha.
