About
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain is
positioned on the side of the Rudra Sagara Lake. This historic and ancient
temple is three storied temple, where is Mahakaleshwar Lingam is placed at the
beneath part and Nagachandresvara was installed at the uppermost part of the
temple complex. During the Parmar period, the walls of the temple have numerous
sculptures that have been engraved beautifully.
Almost all the Shiva festivals
are celebrated with a set of rituals in this temple. The festival of Shivratri
is observed at grand scale with a great devotion and fervour. The atmosphere of
the temple provides peace to mind and heart of the devotees and the tourists. This
illustrious pilgrimage centre also arranges a fifteen days fair at the time of
Mahashivratri Parva every year. A fest (fair) has been organised by the local
devotees and the organisers to celebrate this big festival annually. Devotees
observe fast on this night and do not eat anything till night and offer fruits,
flowers and bel leaves on Shiva Linga. People believe that on this holy day
Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Maa.
