Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple is famous as one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams. This hindu pilgrimage is popular as the 15th Shiva Sthalam in Tamil Nadu. It is situated near Thiruvalangadu Road. Lord Shiva in this temple is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested). )”. This is also very famous as one of the 44 Paadal Petra Sthalams where all the “Moovars” have rendered their Pathigams. This Shiva temple has mainly three corridors and its main tower (Rajagopuram) has 5-tiers.
Mythology says that this is one of the five sacred places where Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance - ‘Oorthava / Kali Thandavam’ and the place where Lord Natarajar competed with Goddess Kali in a dance performance. The temple has beautiful hall named- the Natarajar mandapam which is called “Rathna Sabhai (Gem hall).
MahaShivratri is celebrated with a great show and pomp annually to pay homage to Shiva. People offer Bel patri and Milk to the Shivlinga on this major festival. Organisers take participation in decorating this old temple on the noteworthy occasion.
