Shri Sthaneshwara temple is famous as Shri Sthanu temple among the tourists and the local residents. It is situated in Thanesar in District Kurukshetra at Haryana. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the prominent places among the famous and holy temples of Kurukshetra. According to Hindu mythology, this notable temple is famed as one of the oldest temples of Kurukshetra as well. As per the legend, the Pandavas and Lord Krishna worshiped Lord Shiva together here before Mahabharata war and sought His blessings to win the Great War.
Almost all the festivals are celebrated with a
set of rituals in this temple. The festival of Shivratri is observed at grand
scale with a great devotion and fervour. The atmosphere of the temple provides
peace to mind and heart of the devotees and the tourists. This illustrious
pilgrimage centre also arranges a fifteen days fair at the time of
Mahashivratri Parva every year. A fest (fair) has been organised by the local
devotees and the organisers to celebrate this big festival annually. Devotees
observe fast on this night and do not eat anything till night and offer fruits,
flowers and bel leaves on Shiva Linga. People believe that on this holy day
Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Maa.
