Tabo
Monastery is famous as- 'Ajanta of the Himalayas among the local peeps. It
is one of the prominent and the famous monasteries positioned in the Lahaul and
Spiti Valley. It is probably the ancient and the oldest Buddha-Pilgrimages
since it was established in 996 A.D. It is situated at a height of 3050 meters
above the sea level. Being the oldest monastery of India it is popular for its
unique scroll paintings and elegant images in Stuccos, Buddhist Paintings in frescos
along with the Drawings on the interior walls. This distinguished Buddha Temple
is managed by Archaeological Survey of India and is announced as the National
historic treasure. The beautiful part of the Temple premises is its assembly
halls which portrays the murals of the life of Buddha and the Cave Depictions. The
main attraction of the temple is its Fine Arts on the Pillars and the Walls of
the assembly. It is a spiritual and the religious centre for the practitioners
of Yoga and the Meditation in the town. Buddha Purnima is celebrated with a
great pomp and fervour for 2 days in the Pilgrimage. People come and visit this
holy place on the Birthday of Lord- Buddha as well.
