About
Vishvanatha Temple in Khgajuraho is a historic
Hindu temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located among the western
group of Khajuraho Monuments. This ancient temple is basically a UNESCO World
Heritage site. This is notable lod Shiva abode and thus named after the popular
Lord Shiva’s name known as "Vishvanatha” which means- "Lord of the
Universe". The Chandela king Dhanga established this illustrious Hindu
Pilgrimage in 999 CE or 1002 CE. Its architectural style and the interior
designs are way too similar to that of the older Lakshmana Temple and the newer
built Kandariya Mahadeva Temple. The main temple premise features several
different sculptures of various deities such as- Surasundaris (celestial
maidens), couples making love, and mythical creatures. This Shiva temple represents
the romance and love making styles at Khajuraho. The temple also has several
niches with sculptures of the seven goddesses, Shiva's consort Parvati and dancing
Ganesha idols.
Shrawan Maas and MahaShivratri are the festivals
celebrated with a great pomp and devotion every year. People come not only from
India but outside it to visit this sacred Shrine of Lord Shiva and to carry
water from the holy well. Dev- Diwali and Prodosh Vrats are also commemorated
inside the complex among the local devotees. Fairs have been organised and people
often fast on the night of Shivratri and sing hymns and praises in the name of
Lord Shiva. . People believe that on this holy day Lord Shiva was married to
Parvati Maa.
