Details

Shri Bhima Kali Temple is a very popular temple at Sarahan, which is in Himachal Pradesh in India. This temple is dedicated to the mother goddess Bhimakali, presiding deity of the rulers of former Bushahr State. The temple is located about 180 km from Shimla and is famed as one of 51 Shakti Peethas. The town Sarahan, where the temple is sited is very famous as the gateway of Kinnaur. At a distance of 7 km from Sarahan is the River Satluj down the temple. Sarahan is recognized with Sonitpur, which is already mentioned in Puranas. Because, Banasura, who was the ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and the eldest among the one hundred sons of great ablative demon King Bali and the great grandson of Vishnu votary Prahlad, during the Puranic age was the ruler of this majestic state.

Legends:

According to the Mythology, the incarnation of the goddess is associated to the Daksha-Yajna incident when the ear of the Sati fell at this place and became a place of worship as a Pitha - Sthan. At Present, the icon of this eternal goddess is consecrated in the form of a virgin at the top-most storey of the new building of the temple. The goddess as Parvati, just below that storey, the daughter of Himalaya is enshrined as a divine consort of Lord Siva. The main temple has another three temples dedicated to Lord Raghunath ji, Narsingh ji and Patal Bhairva Ji (Lankra Veer) – who is well- known as the guardian deity.

Festivals Observed

The foremost religious festival Udyapan Jag is basically coupled with this temple and is mostly celebrated at some intervals of a hundred years or more. The last Jag took place 280 years after the preceding one in the year 1904. At that particular time, the temple treasury contributed about Rs. 30,000 /- and only a small part was taken from the temple. The Jag lasted six months and 600 goats were slaughtered at that time and 60 Brahmans housed and fed. The Hom Ceremony which is popular as ‘feeding the sacred fire’ lasted for 11 days and 5 or 6 days utilized for an immense gatherings of people across all parts of the state. During that congregation, all the deities were brought in and a ground feast was given to the whole assemblage.
