Guruvayur temple is also known as “Bhooloka Vaikunta” which means the abode of Vishnu on earth. Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Kerala and also the fourth largest temple in India in terms of the number of devotees visiting per day. The temple is built in a typical Kerala architecture and is one of the popular tourist places in Kerala and is a must visit place of pilgrimage for Hindus.Lord Sri Krishna can be seen in standing posture with four hands carrying Sankhu, Sudarshana Chakram, Lotus and Mace.

History

According to the Hindu legends, the idol is worshipped heresince more than 5000 years old. "Kokasandesam" a Tamil literary work references to a place called Kuruvayur are made in the 14th century. Fifty years after Narayaniyam was composed many references to Kuruvayur are seen as early as the 16th century. "Kuruvai" means "sea", hence the village on the Malabar Coast may be called Kuruvayur in ancient Dravidian languages However, the earliest temple records date back to the 17th century.

Festivals Observed

This popular Krishna temple in Kerala celebrates the Sreekrishna Jayanti (Ashtami Rohini) or Janamasthmi with lots of enthusiasm and devotion and his idol is made of Patalanjana stone which has special medicinal properties and thus makes the idol unique. The deity in the form of 'baby Krishna' or Laddu Gopal and is decorated with gold ornaments; tulsi and rose garlands and is the main attraction during janamasthmi festival .Paal Payasam (Milk Kheer) and Neyyappam are the two significant delicacies prepared and distributed amongst the devotees who enjoy the ritualistic mass feast organized by the temple authorities.
