Details

The Navagraha Temple is famed as the temple of the nine celestial bodies. It is located on a hillock named ‘Chitrachal which is in the south-eastern part of the city of Guwahati in Assam. It is well- known known as the abode of one of the most important celestial bodies-Sun. In the temple complex, there are basically 9 phallic symbols of Lord Shiva, each portioned into a different coloured cloth representing Surya, Mangala Chandra, Budha, Shukra, Shani, Brihaspati, Rahu and Ketu. Simultaneously, Navgraha temple is also a research centre of the astrology and for the astronomy. Initially, the temple was destructed by an earthquake, later on it was re-constructed. In 1752 A.D, the present temple was constructed by the King Rajesvar Singha. However, the garbhagriha or the the innermost part of the temple anyhow survived after the earthquake, while the upper portion was reformed with metallic iron sheets.Each of the nine celestial; body is represented by a Shivalingam located within the temple(which totals to nine) and is covered with symbolic colored cloth of each planet. NavagrahaTemple is a big center for astrological and astronomical research. A ritual custom of Assamese people is observed to worship Lord Sun (Surya Puja) to pay their homage to the Gods.

How to reach:

Visitors can easily reach Navagraha Temple, which is situated very near to the city-Guwahati.

By road: People can get to ‘Navagraha’ Temple by hiring a cab or by bus. As buses and taxis/cabs are deftly available to the temple complex.

By rail: Guwahati is well linked with the other parts of India through rail. Thus tourists can reach there by railway services as well.

By air: Guwahati has an international airport also. Thus, we can reach Guwahati and Navagraha Temple through airways.

 

 

History

Navagraha Temple is also called as Abodes of Surya or the temple of nine celestial bodies. As the name indicates, Navagraha Temple is dedicated to the nine planets of the solar system- Sun (Surya) , Merucry (Buddha) , Venus (Shukra) ,Jupiter (Brihaspati) , Mars (Mangal) , Saturn (Shani), Moon (Chandra), Rahu and Ketu areworshipped altogether here.  In the late 18th century, it was constructed by Ahom King- Rajeswar Singha who was the son of Rudra Singha. A devastating earthquake in Assam broke the temple into pieces and the inner part of the temple was partially broken. After that, it was later rebuiltafter a while. A tank was also built to provide water to the devotees who come to pay homage to the Gods. The inner part of the temple - Garbhagriha, which was built of bricks, still exists in the complex. The temple got destructed and broke off by the ruinous earthquake after a few centuries. Nonetheless, it was re-constructed later on.
