Bhimashankar Dham Jyotirlinga Temple

About

Details

Bhimeswar Dham is situated at ‘Dakini hills;’ which is also known as Dahini Pahar just near to the ‘Deepor Beel’ near ‘Pamohi’ in Guwahati. It is one of the most popular Jytorilingas and thus named as- Bhimeswar Dwadas Jyotirlinga Dham.

The devotees have elucidated the fact that the Bhimeswar dham at Pamohi to be the same Dwadas Jyotirlinga. However Bhimashankar dham of Pune is also mentioned by so many visitors and devotees as the Dwadas Jyotirlinga. A shiva Linga is enclosed by a hill stream along with a water stream which continuously flows over the Linga. A Lord ‘Ganesha’ temple is built on the half way to this ‘Dham’. As such no idol of Lord Shiva can be found other than Shiva Linga on the hill. The path which reaches to Shiva Linga is way too beauteous and nifty which covers a corking mountain and stream view.

Legends:

According to Hindu Mythology the brother of Lanka king Ravana- Kumbhakrana fell in love with the daughter of Patol Lok- Karkati, When Ravana came to invite Karkati’s father and Kumbhakarna to fight with Rama, Kumbhakarna denied to come until Ravana allowed him to marry Karkati. However on his brother’s wish on the advice of Narada, Ravana agreed and allowed Kumbhakarna to get married to Karkati. After marriage Kumbhakarna left Karkati to participate in the war with Rama. Kumbhakarana died during the war and after his death, Karkati gave birth to Kumbhakarna’s son; who was named as Bhimasura. The son of Kumbhakarna- Bhimasura did a hard penance to get boon from Lord Brahma. However he challenged Lord Vishnu to fight with him afterwards. Lord Vishnu accepted the fight and lost the war to keep Lord Brahma’s boon. This made Bhimasura very conceited and regardless he started conquering various kingdoms. He also imprisoned the king Priyadharman (also called Kamrupeshwar) and his wife Dakshinadevi of Kamrupa.
